entry 4- what is daylight savings?
Daylight savings time? What exactly is it? Daylight saving time is a seasonal time change in which clocks are set ahead of standard time for a period of time during the year. Around 40% of countries use daylight savings to make better use of daylight and conserve energy. This begins in the spring, usually at night to avoid disrupting the day. The clock is advanced (usually by an hour), and when it ends, the clocks are reset to standard time. Why was daylight saving time used? The Standard Time Act of 1918 established the concept during World War I in order to save resources for the war effort and lengthen the working day. As a means of conserving fuel, the United States enacted the first Daylight Saving Time law in 1918. President Nixon signed the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act into law in 1973, making Daylight Saving Time permanent in the United States. It is said to be useful because, as the sun sets one hour later in the evenings during Daylight Saving Time, the need for electricity for household lighting and appliances is reduced. During Daylight Saving Time, people spend more time outside in the evenings, which reduces the need for electricity in the home.
